Gil Elvgren (1914 – 1980) is certainly the best known and most creative Pin-Up artist of the last century.
No one has influenced this kind of painting as much as he and with his countless works, his work encompasses a very broad spectrum of photorealistic pictures and drawings.
He achieved his great popularity through the ability to present his models in a particularly provocative way, with sparkling eyes, a warm smile, very accentuated body shapes and of course the sexy poses of the models. His girls never look dated either. He described the perfect pin-up model as a girl with a face of a 15-year-old on a perfect body of a 20-year-old. Elvgren was born in Minnesota on March 15, 1914, as son of a typical middle-class family.
He had a carefree childhood and wanted to become an architect. But after just one year of study, he decided to go into painting. In Chicago he attended the American Academy of Art. He soon received his first commissions from Brown & Bigelow (B & B) to design calendar title pages. Elvgren worked for B & B for 28 years and was one of the highest paid pin-up artists. In the course of this time he refined his skills and his pictures became more and more expressive.
Elvgren also painted several well-known posters for Coca-Cola and other well-known and large US companies.
Elvgren died of cancer in 1980 at the age of 65.
